Capsules for radiological ambient measurement monitors
LEA produces capsule type radioactive sources with an added thread for incorporation on the measuring equipment, to continuously ensure the stability of the system.

Radiological ambient measurement monitors are used when there is a risk of external exposure. This kind of monitors can be found in nuclear installations for the radiological monitoring of workers but also in the environment for monitoring the ambient radioactivity.
These monitors are mostly configured and put into service by radiation protection experts, in and around nuclear facilities when there is a risk of contamination.
The calibration and the periodical check of these monitors are key for the workers’ safety. These calibration and periodical check are made with the aid of radioactive sources which differ according to types and models of the equipment manufacturers and particular specifications.
To meet the monitor’s calibration and periodical check requirements and depending on the different manufacturers, LEA (Laboratoire d’Etalons d’Activité) has adapted (activity and geometry wise) the source according to the type of monitors and proposes a large catalog of sources, with a source holder making it easier to assemble and disassemble the source of the monitor.
These sources are used for the proper functioning of the CIEP (Photon irradiance sensor) irradiation measurement monitors or noble gas measurement monitors (Gas Sensors for Monitoring Air Pollution), by generating a background noise to ensure the great functioning of the equipment. If the background noise is not detected, an alarm is generated.
To realize your tailor-made sources based on your need, an internal study is initiated to validate:
- The production feasibility (manufacturing and measurement) of the source in accordance with the scope of LEA’s license,
- The possibility to issue a calibration certificate under COFRAC* accreditation,
- The level of uncertainty of the measurement,
- The type of packaging and associated transport,
Or we will suggest a catalog source close to your desired specification.
Radiological ambient measurement monitors can use a capsule type radioactive source to continuously ensure the stability of the system. LEA produces this type of source with an added thread for incorporation on the measuring equipment.
The most request sources contain 1.4 µCi (50kBq), 5.4µCi (200kBq), 10µCi (370kBq) or 24 µCi (900 kBq) of 241Am, 137Cs, 60Co, most of them are 137Cs of 10µCi sources.
For more than 20 years, beyond the catalog references LEA has been designing tailor-made sources suited to a specific need.
LEA it is more than 50 handled radionuclides, more than 600 catalog references and more than 2 000 tailor-made sources studied since 1999
At the end of 2019, LEA has delivered more than 1,000 CIEP type sources to the various French nuclear sites using CIEP-type monitors. At CEA Cadarache (South of France), a specific source assembly/ dismantling program at multiple CEA and at TechnicAtome facilities was successfully conducted with our operational partner AEMCO, and thanks to an excellent collaboration with the Radiation Protection Department of CEA Cadarache.
In respect of LEA license granted by the French Authority those tailor-made sources solution allow you:
- To modify the activity of our reference standards
- To adapt different geometries to meet the requirements of your devices
- To test a new matrix
- To create a standard for your new equipment
- To receive advice from our R&D and Method Departments to meet your specific needs
- The design and the purchase of dedicated supports or specific components by LEA
The milestones of these tailor-made sources realization will be shared with you, at your facility or at LEA, in order to always ensure that we meet your requirements.
