Eco-Design
To the integration of environmental considerations into the design of goods and services.
Effective Dose
Weighted total dose equivalent delivered to different tissues and organs of the body by internal and external radiation. The unit of measure for effective dose is the Sievert (Sv).
End-Fitting
Metal parts located in the upper (head end) and lower (foot end) part of the fuel assembly in a reactor
Enriched Uranium
Before it is used in the fabrication of fuel elements, natural uranium is enriched in uranium 235 (the uranium 235 content going to 3% to 95%). An isotopic separation process is used to "enrich" the natural uranium in uranium 235. The physical and chemical processes used to produce enriched uranium also produce uranium with a uranium 235 content that is lower than the natural content: this is known as depleted uranium or Tails.
Enrichment
Process by which an element's content of a fissile isotope is increased. For example, the fissile uranium 235 content of natural uranium is 0.7% and the non-fissile uranium 238 content is 99.3%. To make it utilisable in a pressurized water reactor, the proportion of uranium 235 is increased to around 3 or 4%.
