INES
International Nuclear Event Scale. The INES is an international scale that defines the safety significance of an event occurring in a nuclear facility. The scale was conceived by an international group of experts assembled by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). It was applied internationally in 1991. Like existing seismic or avalanche scales, the INES is a communication tool for the public and the media. Nuclear events are classified from least serious to most serious on a scale of 0 to 7. For example, the Chernobyl accident was a level 7 event. On 24 June 1999, the French nuclear safety authorities decided to extend the scope of the INES to include radioactive material transportation for a one year trial period, following a recommendation by the High CSSIN, Conseil Supérieur de la Sûreté et de l'Information Nucléaire, the council on nuclear safety and information.
IPSN (Institut de protection et de Sûreté Nucléaire)
